of Bibles, books & letters...
This has been a full week for us with doctors appointments, a trip to the vet (Mr. Cade has been off his feed and had developed a funny little cough but the vet pronounced him in good health and said it's probably the warm weather that's made him skip some meals), and house hunting so I really haven't had much time to search for interesting links and articles. On Memorial day did have a nice hike but unfortunately I only managed to write one letter so I'm still WAY behind on my correspondence. After spending so many hours driving up and down the mountain this last week, I just want to stay home and relax today so hopefully I can get a few more letters written. I doubt I'll get all caught up on my correspondence but I'm hoping to at least put a dent in it.
Because of having such a crazy week, I only have a few links. Monergism shared some free (Christian) e-books you can download: Dispensationalism Today, Yesterday and Tomorrow by Grover Gunn, The Story of the Puritans by Erroll Hulse and a link to a pdf of A Short Explanation and Defense of the Doctrines of Grace by Grover Gunn. Since they're all free, I've downloaded all of them but haven't had time yet to even look at them let alone start reading them and since my TBR list is really long it'll be a while before I do. Plus, 2 of the many books I put on hold at the library came in and another is moving up the hold list quickly, so I need to start them. Both books were given good reviews by some of the book bloggers I follow (I don't remember which bloggers but the books are The Pursuit of Mary Bennet: a Pride and Prejudice novel by Pamela Mingle and The Sweetgum Knit Lit Society by Beth Pattillo) and the 3rd hold that will be in soon is Francine Rivers' newest release, Bridge to Haven. There were 10 - 15 people ahead of me when I put my hold on it but it's zipping along and now I'm 3rd in line. Don't know if that means it's so good people are flying through it or if the library is only letting people check it out for a shorter time than you can keep older books. I'm also adding a link on my "blogroll" to a "How To Study the Bible Timesaver Bookmark" designed by Kim Clayton, a Precept Bible study leader who also leads some studies online. I've found it to be very handy over the years so asked for permission to share it here. You can download it from Dropbox. She based it mostly on Kay Arthur's book How to Study Your Bible and some from Howard Hendrick's Living By the Book and designed it so you can fold it in half (length-wise) and use it as a bookmark. Hope y'all are having a relaxing day as we remember those who served our country and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It's a gorgeous day here in the mountains so I hope to read, write some letters, and go for a hike (although yesterday there were so many tourists and hikers that I couldn't find a parking spot at one trailhead so we may just stay on paved streets today - it's still pretty since there are so many trees). Here are two letter related links for your enjoyment.
Posting this on Thursday since I'll be off the mountain most of the day tomorrow. Kaiser pharmacists may be going on strike next week which means I have to make the hour and 15 minute drive to pick up my husband's prescriptions (we don't want to run out if the strike lasts very long) this week and while we're down there, we figure we should do all of our errands and shopping - no point wasting gas on extra trips. Regular gas in this little tourist town is $4.49 per gallon so we combine all our errands into one trip. Makes for a long day but it's better than several trips down the hill. Have a blessed weekend. I've mentioned that I really liked Glimpses of Grace by Gloria Furman and I've started following her blog. When I checked it a few days ago she posted that she had been interviewed on a radio program called Haven Today. I hadn't ever heard of it before but was thrilled that the four audio programs (so far) of her interview are available online and I'm enjoying listening to them when I have a few spare minutes to use the computer and my daughter isn't already on it - easier said than done. =D They're mostly about her new book (Treasuring Christ When Your Hands Are Full: Gospel Meditations for Busy Moms) but they have mentioned the first one a few times as well. Turns out Haven Today has interviewed many well known Christians and you can listen to those interviews as well. People like Stuart Townend, Scotty Smith, Keith & Kristyn Getty, Joni Eareckson Tada, Tedd Tripp, Tim Challies, Milton Vincent (his book's great, too), Michael Horton, Tim Keller, Nancy Leigh DeMoss, and many, many more. You can find their list of interviews by featured guest here. And to make it easier to find them, Gloria Furman's interviews are here: part 1, part 2, part 3 & part 4. This video of Mark Dever talking about "creating a reading culture in your church" is one that I posted a couple years ago on our church's Facebook page. When I was listening to it again I thought it might be good to share here as well (I don't think I've ever posted it here but I'm not 100% certain). This morning Tim Challies posted a Vimeo video about missionaries taking the gospel to the YembiYembi tribe in Papua New Guinea. What I was able to view of it looked great but our internet connection is either too slow or doesn't like Vimeo, so I searched and found this on YouTube. Not as in-depth (or as long) as the one Challies posted, but still pretty good.

I'm not sure where to put this blog or how to classify it. This blogger is a daughter of a friend and while I'm pretty sure she's a Christian, it isn't a Christian blog, or books & reading or letter writing & mail art. It's basically about their travels so I'm putting it here for now:
