of Bibles, books & letters...
I admit I am a slow reader, so when I came across this article about "How To Read More -- A Lot More" I just had to share it. What slow reader wouldn't be encouraged by the following quote? When you read a lot of books people inevitably assume you speed read. In fact, that’s probably the most common email I get. They want to know my trick for reading so fast. They see all the books I recommend every month in my reading newsletter and assume I must have some secret. So they ask me to teach them how to speed read. Mr. Holiday makes some very good points and shares helpful tips to read more, but I don't agree with him on his view about not using libraries. Used books and Kindle specials are wonderful when you're on a tight budget but even those $1 - $5 purchases can quickly add up and before you know it, you've spent more than you should have. The really great books that I love and want to read again I keep (and believe me, my bookshelves are stuffed), but there are plenty of good books that I liked but didn't really care about enough to read again, let alone buy. The library is great for helping you determine which group a book falls into for you. There have been more books than I care to admit that I spent money on (in the pre-tight budget days) only to realize a few short years later that I should have borrowed them from the library because I didn't care about re-reading them. And unless it's a rare edition, there isn't a very good return on used books. If it's a book I loved, I've "made it my own" by marking it up - which makes it worth more to me but no one else. :-)
Sorry that my posts have been so far and few between lately. "Life" has simply been busier than usual for me the last few months and summer promises to be very full as well (probably even busier), so I have had very little time for surfing the net, letter writing or blog posting. I've even forgotten to snap photos of the few letters I've managed to write recently. :-( (But hey, at least I remembered to take two pictures of family on our trip to visit family last week and even posted them on f/b for more distant friends and relatives to see.)
It was a quick trip but I did manage to did a teensy bit of web surfing and found a few posts to share:
---------------------------- On a completely different topic, does anyone else have (and HATE) Windows 8? I hear Microsoft is releasing 8.1 today. Will it really be better? For me at any rate, Windows 8 is a pain and makes surfing the net (actually everything on the computer) a much less enjoyable experience. Earlier this month at book club, one of the members shared a wonderful letter that Clementine Churchill wrote to her husband Winston in 1940. I liked it so much that I wanted to share it here so I searched online and found that Letters of Note posted it last year (how did I miss it at that time?). Apparently, Mr. Churchill had become rather short-tempered with his staff during the war and she lovingly and wisely took him to task about his behavior in this letter, advising him to treat them better.
Some favorite quotes from her letter: "One of the men in your entourage (a devoted friend) has been to me & told me that there is a danger of your being generally disliked by your colleagues and subordinates because of your rough sarcastic & overbearing manner.... "My Darling Winston — I must confess that I have noticed a deterioration in your manner; & you are not so kind as you used to be."

Good news - Precept Ministries will be releasing a new edition of their New Inductive Study Bible in your choice of NASB or ESV this year. And if you pre-order (now) then buy it from them between August 1 -7, you'll get it for 40% off the retail price with free shipping and free online training to go with it (the catch is that it's limited within the US only). I love my old NASB NISB but it's starting to fall apart and since I'm really liking the ESV, I am glad they're offering this option. I'm curious to find out if they'll offer the online training on the same site where they already host online Bible studies or if they'll do something else. |

I'm not sure where to put this blog or how to classify it. This blogger is a daughter of a friend and while I'm pretty sure she's a Christian, it isn't a Christian blog, or books & reading or letter writing & mail art. It's basically about their travels so I'm putting it here for now:
